BIO

Giulia Poppi, artis
t. Born in Modena, based in Frankfurt am Main and Bologna.

My sculptures are devices made with coloured lights, fake transparencies, anatomical archetypes or, sometimes, tiny mechanisms hidden in an interstice. They dream of sounding like an onomatopoeia, attracting like a vintage erotic magazine, dancing like a sea animal, and settling like a paradise in a food can.
They could be a rigid membrane or a softshell.
Sometimes I think of my sculpture as a movie or a picture. But I need physical experience. The matter is genuine and ambiguous. It can rapidly change.

I showed my work in independent art spaces, galleries and institutions, among others: Spazio Volta (Bergamo, 2021), Straperetana (Pereto, 2021), la Quadriennale (Roma, 2020), P420 (Bologna, 2016, 2018), CarDrde (Bologna, 2019), Gelateria Sogni di Ghiaccio (Bologna, 2019), Mambo (Bologna, 2017), Localedue (Bologna/Torino, 2017), Campo Base (Torino, 2019), Biennale Giovani (Monza, 2017). I produced works in collaboration with industrial brands like Illy and Plastopiave. Between 2016 and 2018 together with two other artists, I founded and curated the artist-run space Malgrado garagino. My works entered public and private collections.
